About SIAM
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) aims to advance the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society.

About the Chapter
The SIAM student chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was created in the fall of 2006, is supported by the SIAM parent organization, and is a registered student organization at UIUC.

PETSc Tutorial

Dr. Barry Smith, Argonne National Laboratory - "An Introduction to PETSc"

  • Thursday 1/29/09 from 10:45AM - 12:45PM
  • Siebel Center 3405

PETSc (portable, extensible toolkit for scientific computing) is a suite of data structures and routines for the scalable (parallel) solution of scientific applications modeled by partial differential equations. It employs the MPI standard for all message-passing communication. The PETSc libraries are used extensively in large-scale simulation with application to nano-simulations, geosciences, CFD, electrodynamics, optimization, etc in industry and at the labs. The PETSc library is known for its accessibility to beginners and can be accessed through C, C++, Fortran and Python. The library includes structures for parallel vectors and matrices, Krylov solvers and preconditioners, Newton based nonlinear solver, and time integration methods, and more.
