The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) aims to advance the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society.

About the Chapter
The SIAM student chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was created in the fall of 2006, is supported by the SIAM parent organization, and is a registered student organization at UIUC.

04/12/2012 Python Workshop!

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED! Over 200 people have responded, and 1404 classroom in Siebel cannot hold more than that.

Dr. Ulrike Meier Yang will give a talk on Developing Scalable Solvers for High Performance Computers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, on Nov. 3, from 10 am in DCL 2240. You can read an abstract here.

  • Tuesday, Oct 25 from 6 pm we will have a Python Workshop for Science and Engineering Students, in Siebel Center 2404. In this workshop, basics of Python programming language will be introduced, and its applications in scientific computing will be discussed. No prior experience required. Space is limited!

SIAM has some exciting events coming up soon, take a look:

  • Monday, Oct 17, from 5 pm in Siebel Center 4405, we will have the first Paper Reading discussion session of the semester.
    We will talk about the 2005 paper Ten-digit algorithms by Nick Trefethen. Refreshments will be provided, as well as copies of the paper.
  • Tuesday, Oct 25 from 6 pm we will have a Python workshop. More details soon.
  • Thursday, Nov 3, we'll have a Game Night, (with lots of board games) in Siebel Center in room 4405, starting at 6 pm. Bring a friend!

Welcome back! SIAM has many fun and informative events planned for this semester, and we hope you'll join us for them. Here's what's on the agenda so far: 

  • Sept 1 - MATLAB tutorial for people who need help getting started with MATLAB for their coursework or could just use a refresher. (held in DCL L520, 5-6 pm)
  • Sept 6 - Another MATLAB tutorial! (also in DCL L520, 5-6 pm)
  • Sept 8 - Game Night, a SIAM tradition. Refreshments will be provided, so bring your friends. (4405 Siebel, 6 pm)
  • Sept 15 - SIAM staff will be representing the organization at the Graduate Resource Fair. Come say hi and learn more about us. (Illini Union, Rooms A,B,C, 11 am to 2 pm)

4/11/11 SIAM will soon present a talk by Robert Haber entitled 'Adaptive spacetime finite element methods for multi-scale simulations in computational science and engineering'. Details on the topic and the speaker can be found here. The talk will take place on Apr. 18 at 4 pm, at 4405 Siebel Center.

4/27/10: Another SIAM Student Chapter Colloquium will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 4/28 from 11 am in Siebel Center 3403. Prof. Nathan Kutz , Chair of Applied Mathematics at University of Washington, will talk about his software called SCORELATOR that autogrades python and other languages. More info
11/12/09: We will hold another SIAM Colloquium lecture Thursday, Nov 12. Speaker is professor William Kramer, who is going to talk about Challenges and Opportunities of Peta-scale Computing. The room and time is as usual Siebel Center 4405 at 1 pm.
10/22/09: We will host another SIAM Colloquium talk on Thursday, October 22 1-2 pm in Siebel center 4405. Speaker is Professor Arif Masud from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Department of Aerospace Engineering. Prof. Masud is going to talk about "Stabilized Finite Element Methods and Turbulence".
9/21/09: For the first lecture of Fall 2009 SIAM student chapter colloquium, we have invited Prof. Jonathan Freund, who is going to talk about "Simulation of cellular blood flow in complex geometry microvessels." We meet on Monday Sept. 28 at 1 pm in Siebel Center room 4405. For more info go here.

6/23/09: Official Chapter Name has been selected, and is "Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Student Chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign".

4/30/09: Chapter officers elected. Next year's officers are Nana Arizumi (Secretary), Elena Caraba (Treasurer), Arun Gain (Vice-President), James Lai (Vice-President), Dmytro Yershov (President), and Qianyi (Carrie) Zhao (Secretary).
4/24/09: We will host the last talk in Spring 2009 semester at our colloquium lecture series. The speaker is Prof. Gerard Awanou from Northern Illinois University will talk about "Finite Elements for Symmetric Tensors in Three Dimensions" on Thursday, April 30 at 3pm in Siebel Center room 4403. This year we plan to hold the UIUC SIAM Student Chapter Colloquia, a series of talks on computational science/engineering, applied math, high-performance computing, and other topics related to SIAM. The regular meeting time of the colloquia will be Monday at 11am, although this may vary somewhat depending on speaker availability.
