2010 News and Major Awards

2010 News

  1. Building the Future Internet: Tarek Abdelzaher and his research team received a grant on developing the "Internet of the Future" (as part of a bigger $7.9M project led by UCLA under the NSF's Future Internet Architecture initiative). The project aims to create a new internet architecture called Named Data Networking (NDN), focused on content, versus the current focus on machines. Abdelzaher's team, in collaboration with UCLA and other institutions, will be working on developing applications for the internet of the future. They aim to prove how NDN can simplify development of these applications as well as make them more efficient and reliable. The team believes that NDN has the potential to significantly improve internet performance and greatly simplify the development and distribution of applications provided by cloud computing.
  2. CTA members Win the Test of Time Award: Profs. Michalis Faloutsos (IRC), Christos Faloutsos (INARC), and Petros Faloutsos (UCLA) were honored with the Test of Time Award for their 1999 paper, "On the Power Law Relationships of the Internet Topology" by SIGCOMM, the premier computer communications conference.  Prior to the paper's publication in Computer Communication Review, the popular assumption was that most computers in a network had roughly the same number of connections. But the Faloutsos brothers showed that the distribution actually is very skewed, with a few nodes having many, many connections, and the vast majority of computers having just one or two. It's a pattern that has since been shown to be true for the distribution of Internet links, social-network friends and blog readership. This knowledge of the topology of the Internet has proven useful for, among other things, designing systems and developing cybersecurity strategies. Citeseer reports the paper as the 4th most sited of all papers published in 1999. The Test of Time Award was presented at SIGCOMM 2010 in New Delhi, India,
  3. [December 2010] After LDC did correction on gold-standard data, Professor Heng Ji's team from CUNY achieved top 3 performance (among 31 system submissions) at the Slot Filling Track at NIST Knowledge Base Population 2010 Evaluation.
